This sexual assault policy should be seen as a work in progress, and our intention is to help lay the groundwork for continuing resistance to rape culture in our community, both during the RNC and beyond. We want this policy to be useful and empowering for everyone it affects, and encourage feedback and input to that end. We also want to see greater participation in the work itself, in hopes that the process of participation will be one of learning and developing skills that leave all involved better equipped to deal with sexual assault and other forms of violence and coercion as they continue to manifest themselves.

RNC WELCOMING COMMITTEE ORDERS TASERS FOR EVERY PROTESTOR

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - The RNC Welcoming Committee (RNC-WC), an anarchist and anti-authoritarian organizing body based in the Twin Cities, announced today that it has ordered tasers for each of its members and friends. The announcement comes on the heels of last month’s St. Paul City Council approval of a St. Paul Police Department (SPPD) request for 234 tasers. Due to a unique corporate-anarchist confidentiality agreement, the exact number of tasers or documentable evidence of this new order will not be disclosed.

Early on the morning of February 2, 2008, the RNC Welcoming Committee’s Northeast Tour was denied entry to Canada- and had to cancel all Canadian events. Upon attempting to backtrack into the US, they were detained for 4 1/2 hours. During this time, officials from both the Joint Terrorism Task Force and the FBI were called in, all their literature was examined and copied, and their computers were taken and the contents reviewed. They were threatened with seizure of their property and “Felony Obstruction of a Federal Investigation” charges, and one individual was put into a holding cell for over an hour. Eventually they were released and told all belongings had been returned to their vehicle- however, upon return to their vehicle they noted that one computer was missing. After going back into the Inspection Building and noting this discrepancy, it was returned.

As you may have heard, the RNC Welcoming Committee is hosting a second planning convergence, pReNC 5.3, on May 3rd of this year. This time around, what we have in mind is an intense, all-day strategizing and organizing session. It’ll be stripped of all the pReNC’s fanfare, in favor of getting down to business- that means no designer SWAG, no red carpets, no wild after-parties.
